Less than 24 hours after landing at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, I was waiting for pre-race instructions at the starting line of the 16 th annual Marathon de Marrakech. I'm really looking forward to this marathon for numerous reasons. First, another state in my 50 states quest and my 9th state, one more and I can join the club. And next I get to see my brother Ed and his girlfriend Bobby. My good friend Rich will be coming with me and he will get his 10th state (drat, before me).

As a coach I am amazed to discover just how difficult it is to convince some runners to rest properly. I have encountered overzealous athletes of all abilities who strategically sneak an extra interval or two during a scheduled workout only to follow it up with a longer-than-suggested recovery run.
