When Duvall, Fall City and Carnation Race Directors collaborated on a new running series five years ago, they hoped racers would show up to compete for the honor of “Top Runner” and they got their wish. The Cup is now a Valley tradition that attracts top local talent to the only age graded competition in the region. Following the July 4th “Run for the Pies” in Carnation, exceptional local runners Paul Abdalla and Gail Hall were named Top Male Runner and Top Female Runner. They were awarded a cash prize and free entry into all three 2011 events along with the Snoqualmie Valley Cup trophy.
This is the 3rd win for Masters Runner Gail Hall! She was ranked 11th nationally as a marathoner in the 90’s, participated in several Olympic Time Trials and has been on two U.S. National Teams! Club Northwest’s Paul Abdalla set all of his personal bests as a Masters Runner from the 1500 to the Marathon and is a six time team member of the CNW Masters Cross Country National team. Reflecting on the age graded Cup competition, Abdalla noted his future goals: “I am a little over a year away from being in the next age group (50). For masters runners, every decade is like being born again – new records to shoot for. In 2012, Cross-Country Nationals will be in Seattle . I will have just moved into my new age group and will get a chance to compete very close to home.” It seems safe to say that Abdalla and Hall will be inspiring us all for years to come!
The Team Cup is new this year. There was some solid competition but in the end, Eastside Runners brought the thunder and dominated. They were awarded a hefty traveling cup trophy that will be theirs until runners toe the line at the Duvall Run next June when it will once again be up for grabs! Come challenge them in 2011!
