Outside of Africa, Rupp has best result
( by Ken Goe, The Oregonian ) BEIJING -- Galen Rupp made his Olympic debut Sunday night at 91,000-seat National Stadium, and he enjoyed it so much he wants do it again.
The 22-year-old from Portland ran in the lead pack with the world's top distance runners for the first half of the men's 10,000 meters before finishing 13th in a field of 35.
Tower masters the 10,000 at championship meet
(By Columbian Sports Staff )Alyssa Tower of Vancouver lapped most of her competition twice to easily win the women’s 10,000-meter race on Friday at the USA Track and Field Masters Championships in Spokane. “I won, so I should be happy,” she said.
Hermiston's Puzey wins Aquaman Duathlon
( By the Herald staff ) Tommy Puzey of Hermiston was the overall leader Friday in the Aquaman Duathlon at Richland's Howard Amon Park.
Puzey finished the two-mile run, half-mile swim and three-mile run in 38 minutes and 4 seconds for the men's championship.
Hood to Coast, By Way of Baghdad
( By Paul Danzer, Columbian Staff Writer )The 27th leg of the Hood to Coast Relay is 5.98 miles along Oregon Highway 202 near Jewel in the Coast Range. It is rated as moderately difficult stretch of the 197-mile route. It will be the last of the three legs Jeff Mark runs for his team on Saturday.
Arnie Young coached track over five decades in Renton
(By Amy Martinez, Seattle Times staff reporter) Arnold "Arnie" Young, described as the "ultimate coach," died of cancer at age 73.
Arnold "Arnie" Young had been diagnosed with cancer when, several years ago, he attended a high-school track meet named after him in Renton. A student-athlete from Lindbergh High School asked Mr. Young, his former coach, to autograph a running shoe and promised: "I'm going to win for you."
Athletes turn to supplements for a competitive edge
Bryton Reim, a junior at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo, is determined to win.
Throughout elementary and middle school, beating competitors in sports had come easily. Back then, Reim had been among his schools' top student athletes, receiving trophies for cross-country, soccer and wrestling.
But high school's different. Competition is no longer just between the neighborhood kids. Opponents show increased strength as they race to compete in state championships.
Aretha Thurmond still itching for a medal
(by Steve Kelley, Seattle Times) Aretha Thurmond won the Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., last month with a discus throw of 213 feet, 11 inches, earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team for the third time. She quit her job as a UW fundraiser, packed up and moved with her infant son to Auburn, Ala., to work full time with a throws coach there.

Snohomish runner wins 3,000-meter race at Junior Olympics
Amy-Eloise Neale of the Snohomish Track Club successfully defended her national title in the 3,000-meter run Saturday at the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics in Omaha, Neb.
Marysville teen goes to Olympics for island nation
Associated Press - MARYSVILLE, Wash. - Newly graduated from Marysville-Pilchuck High School, Haley Nemra just quit her two-year job at Nic and Tony's Pizzeria. She was the slender, dark-haired teenager behind the counter with loads of personality. She made pizzas, calzones, submarine sandwiches and espresso drinks. She made everyone smile.
Wardian, Beck win USATF 50 Mile Trail titles
(USATF Press Release) INDIANAPOLIS - For the seventh year in a row on Saturday, the White River 50 Mile in Crystal Mountain, Wash., was the site of the USATF 50 Mile Trail Championship. The course, sporting spectacular views along the White River and on the Noble Knob Trail in the Norse Peak Wilderness, claims a total of 17,600 feet elevation change.

Monroe Fair Days Fun Run Has Returned
The Monroe Fair Days Fun Run has been brought back after a long hiatus. This year’s event, scheduled for Saturday, August 23, will be a new course that follows the parade route. The 10K and 1 mile runs are in conjunction with the Fair Days parade and the Evergreen Street Fair.

(ALEX W. SUTHERLAND THE BELLINGHAM HERALD)If there was a common denominator among the participants at Saturday’s Chuckanut Foot Race, it was the look that nearly every competitor had while crossing the finish line.
The look could be described as part fatigue, some discomfort, but most delirium. Most runners finished and looked like they had more in the tank.
Greer makes US track roster for Beijing Olympics
Javelin thrower Breaux Greer made the U.S. track and field team for the Beijing Olympics, joining Tyson Gay, Allyson Felix and Jeremy Wariner on the 126-member roster.
Greer, an eight-time national champion, didn't qualify at the recent Olympic trials, finishing 17th and failing to reach the final round.
New Race in Washougal
On July 26th, the 1st annual Mayor’s 8K Run/Walk will take place in Washougal. The event is in conjunction with the town’s 100 year anniversary celebration.
Bloomsday Road Runners Club requests volunteers
USATF national masters track meet
We need 25-30 volunteers each day Aug 7-10 (Thurs- Sun) for the national masters track meet. These people would be doing things like raking pits and changing indicator boards.
